It is not expected that new Officers will know the codes. For this reason, Dispatch will often give both a code and description when issuing a call. We take measures to ensure that our Officers are aware of pending calls. Below are some of the more common codes that we use.
BASIC CODES
Code 1: Respond according to traffic laws.
Code 2: Respond using lights and sirens only at red lights.
Code 3: Emergency response. Lights and sirens on.
Code 4: Situation under control.
Code 33: Radio silence please.
Signal 3: Suspect has evaded.
COMMON TEN CODES
10-1 Reception good
10-2 Reception poor
10-4 Message received
10-5 Relay message
10-6 Busy with a pedestrian, vehicle, investigation, etc.
10-7 Out of service
10-8 In service
10-9 Repeat last transmission

Adam - A Patrol Car with single occupant
Boy - A Patrol Car with two occupants
Sam - A Sergeant and Supervisor
Lincoln - A Lieutenant
Charlie - A Captain, or in some cases construction detail.
Oscar - An Aquatic Unit
Air - Our Helicopter Unit
Mary - A Motorcycle Unit
David - A Detective
